Explorating the Potention of Rice Bran Extract as a Sunscreen
Bran which is only used as poultry feed, actually has another variety of potential, for example is as a sunscreen. Bioactive compounds in rice bran, γ-oryzanol, is known to have atyrosinase inhibition activity which can be used as skin lighteningor as a compound of physical sunscreen. The aim of this research is determine the highest SPF (Sun Protection Factor) value that has the maximum activity as sunscreen. Bran of white rice and red rice were extracted with kinetic maceration method using n-hexane, ethyl acetate and ethanol 96%, and the extracts were then concentrated with rotavapor and assayed with phytochemical screening. In addition, the extracts with various concentration (0.1% to 0.7%) were also assayed for their sunscreen activity by UV spectrophotometry, i.e. SPF value, percent transmission of pigmentation, and percent transmission of erythema. Both extract contain flavonoids and steroid/triterpenoid. The highest SPF values are obtained from ethyl acetate extract with concentration of 0.7%, which are 160.58 (for white rice bran) and 158.71 (for red rice bran). The lowest percent transmission of pigmentation are also shown by ethyl acetate extract at the concentration of 0.7% for both white rice bran and red rice bran, i.e. 8.60% and 9.95%, respectively. Meanwhile, the lowest erythema percent transmission are 0.05% and 0.10%, respectively for ethyl acetate extract of white rice bran and red rice bran at concentration of 0.7%.The highest SPF valuewas found in the ethyl acetate extract of white rice bran 0,7%
