Antimicrobial and Toxicity Test from Methanol Extract and Essential Oils of Leaf Red Betel and Leaf Green Betel



One of the types of plants used as traditional medicines of ethnic Piperaceae, the red betel leaf { Piper crocatum Ruiz & Pav) and green betel leaf {Piper betle L). The second plant contains saponin compounds, flavonoids, polyphenols, tannins and essential oils are efficacious among others reduce inflammation, relieve itching, vaginal discharge cause of deadly microbes, as astrigen (reduced secretion of fluid in the vagina), and antidiarrheal. The study was conducted to determine the toxicity and antimicrobial power of methanol extracts and essential oils on the red betel leaves and betel leaf green. The results of toxicity tests in BSLT show green betel leaf methanol extract is highly toxic (LC50 16.40 ppm), methanol extract of red betel leaves are toxic (LC50 56.10 ppm), green betel leaf essential oils are toxic (LC50 107,81 ppm), while the red betel leaf essential oils are not classified as toxic (LC50 146,79 ppm). And the antimicrobial test results, the smallest concentration to inhibit Staphylococcus aureus from the methanol extract of betel leaf green was 3.12%, betel leaf essential oil was 6.25% green and red betel leaf essential oil is 25%; The smallest concentration to inhibit Escherichia coli from the methanol extract of green betel leaf is 1.56%, betel leaf essential oil was 6.25% green and red betel leaf essential oil is 50%; The smallest concentration to inhibit Salmonella typhi only in the methanol extract of betel leaf green (6.25%), the smallest concentration to inhibit Candida albicans from the methanol extract of betel leaf green was 3.12%, green betel leaf essential oil was 6.25% and oil red betel leaf essential oils are 100%.
